What is electro chemotherapy? Many pet owners sense a queasy feeling when it comes to the therapy variant "chemotherapy" . Background: they are afraid of the possible side effects of chemotherapeutic agents. This is understandable and partially true.

As an alternative for the treatment of skin tumors eelctrochemotherapy has been introduced in human medicine  a few years ago which combines  two processes: electroporation and chemotherapy. By applying a local pulsating flow field, the pores of the tumor cells open, such that the chemotherapeutic agent (bleomycin or cisplatin) can penetrate the Tumor cells in a 8-10000-fold higher concentration, which leads to the death of the tumor cell. The chemotherapeutic agents are administered locally in animals which means that around the tumor and with the electrochemotherapy, only a fraction of the usual amount of the chemotherapeutic agent is required. As a consequence the risk of side effects is also lower by a multiple, but local responsiveness is much higher.

The electric chemotherapy is a gentle, highly effective treatment of skin metastases developing skin cancer, breast cancer, head and neck tumors. Particularly suitable method for diseases and metastases, which can not be removed by surgery and radiotherapy or chemotherapy is poorly responsive.

Very good results often after only a single application and mainly melanoma long-term cures are described for as Long as 8 years in humans.

We will use SENNEX VET ® - a system from BIONMED TECHNOLOGIES.

Which tumors can be treated with it:

  • all tumors that had been previously treated unsuccessfully with surgery or radiation therapy
  • melanomas
  • Kaposi's sarcoma (Human) or all tumors in animals, which are similar to this like MF (epitheliotropic lymphosarcoma)
  • squamous ( the largest sarcoid is best to be treated with brachytherapy , s. there)
  • sarcoids in horses, also fibroplastic up to approx size of a plum
  • Fibrosarcomas in cats and dogs, even orally

Among the latter fibrosarcomas we want to try, in one single session to operate + irradiate locally   + apply elctrochemotherapy in order to hopefully  reduce the recurrence rate. What bothers us at the usual protocols  are the frequent anesthesias which are required for each Treatment usually. Our plan is  to minimise the recidive rate  as much as possible  with only a Minimum number of anestesias. We consider the above mentioned multimodal Approach  promising and gently.
